{"id":216,"date":"2011-03-28T07:50:59","date_gmt":"2011-03-28T10:50:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dkubiske.onmason.com\/?p=216"},"modified":"2011-03-28T07:56:49","modified_gmt":"2011-03-28T10:56:49","slug":"216","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dkubiske.onmason.com\/?p=216","title":{"rendered":"Computing power helps journalists sift through social media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>First posted at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spjdc.org\/node\/13979\" target=\"_blank\">SPJDC.org<\/a><\/strong>, the website of the Washington, D.C. chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/jmsc.hku.hk\">Hong Kong University Journalism and Media Cente<\/a>r sponsored a talk by Rutgers University\u00a0<span style=\"color:#222222;line-height:18px\">media researcher, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#222222;font-family:arial, verdana, tahoma, sans-serif;line-height:18px\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickdiakopoulos.com\/\">Nick Diakopoulos<\/a> late last month.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#222222;font-family:arial, verdana, tahoma, sans-serif;line-height:18px\">The topic: <span style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/jmsc.hku.hk\/2011\/03\/the-impact-of-computing-on-the-changing-landscape-of-news\/\">Innovation and Computing in Journalism<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color:#222222;font-family:arial, verdana, tahoma, sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:18px\">\u201cAs information comes at us faster and faster, we have more and more data to deal with,\u201d Diakopoulos said. \u201cSocial media is pumping out terabytes of this every day. We need computers to help us deal with that scale.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#222222;font-family:arial, verdana, tahoma, sans-serif\"><span style=\"line-height:18px\">Diakopoulos defined computational journalism as \u201cusing computing to facilitate, enable and reinvigorate the practices and processes of journalism, including collecting, organising, making sense of, communicating and disseminating news information, while upholding the values of journalism such as fairness and accuracy.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif\">As part of the presentation Diakopoulos presented two programs to help wade through all that data.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> <span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif\">\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/videolyzer.com\/\">Videolyzer<\/a>\u201d is a fact checking application designed for online videos. <\/span><\/li>\n<li> <span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif\">\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/sm.rutgers.edu\/vox\">Vox Event Analytics<\/a>,&#8221; that asks, &#8220;What would a journalist ask from social media, what could be interesting?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe src=\"http:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/21181869\" width=\"400\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/21181869\">JMSC Media Talk: Innovation and Computing in Journalism<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/jmsc\">JMSC HKU<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\">Vimeo<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First posted at SPJDC.org, the website of the Washington, D.C. chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
